A 42-year-old man has been handed a three-month jail sentence after he was found intoxicated by gardaí four times within eight days.
Peter Dolan of no fixed abode was charged with being intoxicated and engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour at Wine St car park, Sligo on June 6.
He was also charged with being intoxicated at O’Connell St, Sligo and being intoxicated on Hyde Bridge, Sligo on June 5 and June 11 respectively.
The defendant was further charged with being intoxicated and engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour at Grattan St, Sligo on June 13.
Inspector Frank Egan told the court that on June 5 at 1:51pm, gardaí received a report of an intoxicated man at Tobergal Lane. Upon arrival, gardaí noted that Dolan was unsteady on his feet and not making any sense. He was arrested and conveyed to Sligo Garda Station.
On June 6, gardaí arrived at Tesco car park, where they found Dolan intoxicated and shouting “Terry Venables was the best manager” whilst swinging a bottle of wine. He was arrested and conveyed to Sligo Garda Station.
On June 11, gardaí received reports of a highly intoxicated man being a nuisance at Hyde Bridge. He was arrested and conveyed to Sligo Garda Station.
Again on June 13, gardaí received a report of a man being a nuisance at Grattan St as he was standing out in the middle of the road. Once gardaí arrived, Dolan shouted at them with members of the public present.
The court heard that he had 81 previous convictions of which approximately half were for public order offences.
Representing himself, the defendant told Judge Éiteáin Cunningham; “To be honest, I do apologise sincerely for everything that happened. I do have remorse”.
Judge Cunningham was informed that Dolan has been in custody since June 13.
Noting his remorse and his plea but also his previous convictions, Judge Cunningham sentenced Dolan to three months in prison on the engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour on Grattan charge. She backdated the sentence to June 13.
Judge Cunningham told Dolan that he would not spend much longer in custody as he was very close to taking credit for time served.
