Emmerdale fans might be cheering for the return of villainous vixen Sadie King, but the residents of the dales won’t be thrilled to see her again… and none more so than Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley).
It’s been two decades since the iconic uber-soap bitch trod her incredibly chic boots in the village. So long ago in fact, that Robert Sugden had a different face.
Fans may remember that the surly-yet-sexy farmer was played by Karl Davis back then, when Robert embarked on a scandalous, passionate affair with Sadie behind her husband Jimmy King’s (Nick Miles) back.
The fling did not stay secret for long. Sadie and Robert were soon discovered, cementing her reputation as the biggest baddy this side of Hotten.
Now that Sadie’s made her triumphant return to the village after the tragic death of Jimmy and dropped the bombshell that she’s been having an affair with her ex-husband all this time, it’s only a matter of time before she bumps into her fellow villages from back in the day.
Robert, of course, will be top of the list. The two have got major history, new face or not. Patsy Kensit, who plays the fabulous Sadie King, teases their union, and how the scene turns the Robert Sugden recast into an inside-joke.
‘I’m working a lot with Ryan who plays Robert now, and I have a very funny line to him in the pub. He comes up to say hello to me, and I look at him and go, ‘Oh my God, you’ve changed,’ because actually it’s a different actor.’ Karl was wonderful, and Ryan’s fab.’
Robert’s face is not the only thing that’s changed. Sadie will surely to be flabbergasted to learn the bit-of-rough she used to roll in the hay with is now an out gay man in a committed relationship with Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) – who’s presumably going to feel a certain way about his fella’s ex sniffing around.
And sniffing around is what Sadie does. At least according to Patsy Kensit, who drops a tantalisingly cryptic clue about what’s to come between the Queen of kinds and her farm-boy former flame.
‘He and I have had a lot of stuff to do together. He’s very naughty and funny, and that’s been great.’
Why do we get the feeling this ‘stuff’ isn’t going to go down well with Aaron?
But Aaron better watch out. Sadie’s just as dangerous as before. Maybe even more so to hear. Patsy Kensit teases that the iconic character has lost all of her previous status and defence that she enjoyed during her previous stint in the show.
‘At one point, everyone wants her to leave and says, ‘You don’t belong here,’ and she says, ‘No, you’re wrong. This is the one place that I’ve ever actually felt I belonged.’ And she means it. She had a family, the Kings; they had Home Farm.’
‘She had a lot of backing, and she has none of that this time. She’s very much on her own, and what has truly happened to her will come out, but I can’t talk about that now.’
Come on, Patsy! Don’t leave us hanging!
