They’ve reinforced the midfield with blockbuster signing Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle, while winger Christos Tzolis, who produced 22 goals and 29 assists in all competitions for Club Brugge last season, looks an upgrade on the departed Leandro Trossard. Defender Piero Hincapie and goalkeeper Illan Meslier have also arrived to deepen the squad.

One concern will be keeping their key players fit. Bukayo Saka has suffered fitness problems in recent years, missing 40 matches for club and country over the last two seasons. Declan Rice’s workload also needs careful management, while Arteta has already begun the campaign without William Saliba, who is out with a back injury, and with Jurrien Timber short of full fitness.

City answered that on deadline day, signing Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for £125 million to match the British transfer record Liverpool set for Alexander Isak a year earlier. The Argentine becomes the club’s most expensive signing, overtaking the £116 million Elliott Anderson, who arrived earlier in the window as the most expensive British player at the time. Iliman Ndiaye also joined from Everton in a deal worth up to £65 million.

That said, City did spend big in January, bringing in both Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi. And if you’ve got Erling Haaland in your ranks, anything is possible.

Things aren’t too dissimilar at Anfield, where Andoni Iraola has been tasked with getting Liverpool back in the mix after replacing Arne Slot as manager.

The Reds endured a dramatic fall from grace last year, going from champions in Slot’s first season to scraping a fifth-placed finish without a trophy.

What makes that even more baffling is the fact they spent over £450 million on the likes of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, only to nosedive in spectacular fashion.

Those additions, plus centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, winger Victor Munoz and the £123 million arrival of Bradley Barcola, mean Liverpool are blessed with a talented squad that needs knitting together. Few are better suited to that task than Iraola.

Manchester United

Michael Carrick was a breath of fresh air for Manchester United. The ex-England midfielder earned a permanent deal after steering United to third spot and a Champions League return, securing 12 wins from 17 Premier League matches.

But sustaining that kind of form looks a much taller order. The Red Devils enjoyed full weeks of preparation for each game last season, but European commitments could now test their squad.

The transfer window has been solid without being spectacular, with Andrey Santos arriving from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Carlos Baleba from Brighton for a combined £155 million to rebuild a midfield left thin by Casemiro’s departure. United look firmly in the top-four mix, but still two or three signings short of a title challenge.

Even so, Carrick still has a job on his hands and is currently 9/1 to be the next manager to leave his post, which is solid value considering he was only meant to be United’s interim manager at the beginning of the year.

Chelsea

Perhaps the most interesting of all the runners and riders in the Premier League this season, Chelsea have all the tools needed to make a significant impact.

The Blues have appointed Xabi Alonso as manager, and he knows a thing or two about upsetting the title odds after beating Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen. With no European football this campaign, the new boss also has the luxury of more time on the training pitch.

Morgan Rogers is the headline arrival after his British-record move from Aston Villa, though the Blues then lost Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for £125 million on deadline day and moved for Monaco’s Lamine Camara to replace him.

The other additions mix Premier League experience with exciting young talent, while veterans Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson could be a masterstroke.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa’s first European trophy in 44 years came last season when they beat Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final, with Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers on the scoresheet.

But that triumphant side is already looking very different. Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea, Youri Tielemans went to Manchester United, Lucas Digne joined PSG and Ezri Konsa has also gone.

The biggest loss is Ollie Watkins, Villa’s leading Premier League goalscorer, who has completed a £50 million move to Al Hilal.

On the surface, that doesn’t look great for Aston Villa’s chances, but dig a little deeper and there are more than enough reasons to be cheerful.

Unai Emery moved fast to replace Watkins, breaking the club transfer record for the second time this summer to sign Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea. Villa paying a fixed £47.5 million, rising to £65 million with add-ons, a package that tops the £59.5 million agreed for Johan Manzambi earlier in the window.

The Senegal striker scored 11 goals on loan at Bayern Munich last season and knows Emery well from their time together at Villarreal, and he arrives with plenty to prove after being frozen out at Stamford Bridge.

Joao Gomes looks a smart fit to replace Tielemans, while Manzambi, who was named Europa League Best Young Player and dazzled at the World Cup, leads a new era at Villa Park. The emergence of 17-year-old striker Brian Madjo is equally exciting.

Can Arsenal be Invincible again?

Only one side has gone a full Premier League season without losing. Arsene Wenger’s Invincibles won 26 and drew 12 of their 38 games in 2003/04, a season that until last May had also given Arsenal their most recent title.

Arteta’s squad is the best equipped of any since to have a go at it. They’ve kept the majority of their title-winning group, there’s been no great turnover, and the additions should hit the ground running, with Bruno Guimaraes tried and tested in this division and Viktor Gyokeres a year into life in the league.

The counterweight is obvious. Arsenal still lost five times on the way to the title last season, at Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester City, plus home defeats to Manchester United and Bournemouth. One bad afternoon ends this bet.

But that’s the appeal. Two wins from two means the record is still clean, Chelsea at the Emirates is the first proper examination, and 25/1 is a far more enticing way in than a short price about the champions simply retaining their title.

Winner and top goalscorer double

Erling Haaland is 4/7 with bet365 to be the Premier League’s top goalscorer.

That’s for good reason. Haaland – who has scored 112 goals in 132 top-flight games – has won three of the last four Premier League Golden Boot awards, and now requires one more to join Thierry Henry and Mohamed Salah on four.

The Norwegian striker averages 28 goals a season in the Premier League and arrives fresh from a World Cup where he notched up seven goals. His scoring rate stands at 0.91 goals per 90 minutes – the best in the competition’s history.

To finish in the top 4

Aston Villa are 8/1 for a top-four finish, and after two opening defeats that price is a good deal bigger than it was in August. I think it’s generous considering Tottenham are 5/1 having lost both of their own, while Manchester United are 5/4.

The Villans have lost Rogers, Tielemans, Digne, Konsa and now Watkins, which is probably why the price is so backable. Replacing a 30-year-old with a 25-year-old of Jackson’s ceiling is not the worst trade in the world, though.

Tigerish Gomes looks a more mobile replacement for Tielemans, while Manzambi has a ridiculously high ceiling at just 20 years old. Factor in Kamara’s return from injury, the emergence of Brian Madjo and the potential resurgence of Alejandro Garnacho, and I like what I’m seeing.

Villa have already shown they can mix it with the big boys under Unai Emery. They’ve finished in the top four twice in four seasons under the Spaniard and have never finished lower than seventh during his time at the club. Their spirited showing against PSG in the Super Cup was another encouraging sign.
