Everton also made a desperate bid to sign Joshua Zirkzee on loan from Manchester United but that move also broke down.
As a result, manager David Moyes has only Thierro Barry as his only available striker.
Brennan Johnson arrived in a swap deal from Crystal Palace with Dwight McNeil heading the other way.

The Leicester City icon has been linked with multiple clubs this summer including Wrexham and Sao Paulo.
SunSport has reported that Vardy has rejected advances from Wrexham despite their Hollywood ownership.
Vardy became the first £1million player from non-league when Leicester picked him up from Fleetwood in 2012.
He went on to score 200 goals in 500 appearances for the Foxes.

The striker won two Championship titles, the FA Cup, the Community Shield and, of course, the incredible 5,000-1 Premier League in 2015-16.
He also collected the Golden Boot in 2020.
Vardy made 26 caps for England between 2015 and 2018, too – featuring at both Euro 2016 and the 2018 Worle Cup – and scored seven times.
Following his season in Serie A, Vardy wanted to come back to the UK with his family.
Everton did manage to sign Jack Grealish on Deadline Day but also lost Iliman Ndiaye to Manchester City.
