A train has collided with a car in Mayo in what has been described as a “very serious incident”.
The incident took place on the outskirts of Ballyhaunis on a Westport service from Dublin shortly before 9pm.
Multiple emergency services remain at the scene.
It is understood there are two people, who were occupants of the car, receiving treatment. No passengers on the train were injured.
The train had been delayed due to an earlier incident on the Offaly line. It is believed the incident occurred at a crossing that was not automated.
This is the second railway crossing incident to happen on Thursday after a man was hospitalised following a collision on the Irish Rail line in Tullamore this afternoon.
The man was injured when a train struck a tractor crossing the line at Meelaghans, Tullamore, at 3.50pm.
Crew and emergency services were called to the scene.
A garda spokesperson said: “A male has been conveyed to hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.”
In a post on X, Irish Rail said that bus transfers have left Portarlington and will travel to Athlone, where passengers can transfer onto a train service.
“More buses are being arranged,” a spokesperson said.
