Actor William Beck has shared that the tragedy set to unfold for Dylan Keogh during Casualty’s 40th anniversary episodes is going to seriously impact his mental health.
This Saturday, the BBC One medical drama will celebrate 40 years on our screens with two jam-packed episodes that will change everything for Holby City Hospital.
As the team at the ED discover that neighbouring hospital St James has become the site of an explosion, paramedics head over to search through the rubble for bodies.
Amid the emotionally charged story, the anniversary episodes will also signal the start of a very exciting new chapter for the medical drama.
I was thrilled to sit down with Will, Neet Mohan (Rash Masum) and Melanie Hill (Siobhan McKenzie) earlier this year to discuss these milestone instalments.
With Clinical Lead Flynn Byron (Olly Rix) across the city helping people at St James, it’s up to Dylan to lead everyone through the chaos.
Will told me more about the role Dylan takes on as the mayhem unfolds: ‘His role is, at first, I suppose, the mayor or the chief of police in a city that’s the unexpected victim of an explosion.
‘It’s his job to try and impose some order on the chaos. It’s fair to say that somewhere between his hand on the rudder, there’s a breakage and all does not go according to plan.’
Dylan can barely get control of what’s going on around him when he comes across an absolutely horrific situation. As he attempts to process this personal tragedy, Dylan still needs to try and find a way to help his team, and treat the survivors.
‘I think he finds himself in an impossible position in the sense that there’s an internal explosion that occurs, a controlled explosion that cannot be contained’, Will explained.
‘He’s in a workplace and he’s in a position of authority and, more importantly, he’s in a position where this cannot be happening. He knows that. He doesn’t know who to tell, it’s all happening too quickly. If there was a mental health A&E, Dylan would be airlifted.
‘Those characters like Siobhan and Rash, the story is the support network. That’s what the show is and always has been about. But, this is hopefully visually arresting.’
Sharing his reaction to the two episodes, star Neet, who has played Rash Masum since 2017, said: ‘It just builds so much. And then what I loved about the scripts as well was that each character has such a defined through line for the two episodes, everybody goes on a journey.
‘When we were reading it, you’re sometimes not sure how it’ll translate on screen, but I think what’s testament to what Steve [Hughes, the director] has done, and the team, is that each character goes on such a defined journey for these two episodes.

‘The stakes just keep getting raised, and we keep putting that pressure on the team, and that’s what I loved so much about what the end result is from reading the script.’
Siobhan McKenzie star Melanie Hill noted: ‘In the first episode, there were so many little strands of people coming in, you only see them a couple of times, but they’re so well cast and well played that by the second episode, their little story will be rounded off and they’re all very moving, touching stories of people that come in for treatment that really were so well placed by Steve, how it’s been edited and how he’s told these stories to those strands in, I think it’s a miracle how he’s done it.
‘Even towards the end, when we were saying there’s so many things going on, I would’ve forgotten there was a lady in a wheelchair that has her story, and Steve has just slotted it in and we’ve carried on.
‘When you watch it back, it’s just so touching and emotional and brilliant. There are so many layers.’
The Casualty 40th Anniversary special episodes will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on September 5th 2026.
