A MAJOR supermarket has pulled three of its handbags after they were found to pose a serious chemical risk.
Shoppers have been urged to return the bags to their nearest store to receive a full refund.
Three ladies handbags sold in Asda have been pulled from shop shelves after they were found to contain excessive concentrations of chemicals.
The Front Pocket XBody Bag, the Opp Tote Bag, and the Black Nylon Phone Bag all contain unsafe levels of Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP).
Phthalates, commonly used to make plastics softer and more flexible, can pose a health risk to children.
The chemical can also cause possible damage to the reproductive system if it is found in excess quantities.

Asda has therefore issued an urgent recall as the bags do not reach the safety requirements of REACH Regulations 2008.
Sold as part of the supermarket’s fashion range, the black bags retailed between £8 and £16 – with the Phone Bag at £8, the XBody Bag at £10, and the Tote Bag at £16.
The Office for Product Safety and Standards has recommended that consumers stop using the product immediately.
Shoppers who have bought the affected bags have been urged to bring them back to the nearest store where they will receive a full refund.

The supermarket has further confirmed that no receipt is required to get any money back, and to contact customer relations for further information.
A spokesperson for Asda said on the product recall: “We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
