UEFA awards an extra place to the two leagues with the best Coefficient Average, based on their clubs’ results in Europe’s three competitions. England has claimed one in each of the last two seasons, with Newcastle benefiting in 2024/25 and Liverpool last season.

It’s a nervy wait, though, with fifth only confirmed once the European campaigns are complete. Whether it happens again this season remains to be seen.

The ‘nailed-on’ two

No point in wasting time here. Arsenal and Manchester City will be challenging for the Premier League title, so a top-four finish looks virtually assured.

Champions Arsenal have finished in the top four in each of the last four seasons, while the Cityzens are chasing a 17th consecutive top-four finish – the longest active streak in the division.

Chelsea

No issues with player recruitment for Chelsea. New manager Xabi Alonso has been backed to the hills, with around £350million spent on new signings – including headline act Morgan Rogers for a British-record £117m. Alonso is also well-versed in upsetting the odds, having beaten Bayern Munich to deliver Bayer Leverkusen’s first-ever Bundesliga title. There’s also no European football for the Spaniard to worry about.

That said, there are still a few doubts lingering. Alonso has never managed in the Premier League and now has a huge squad to filter down. Getting the right balance and keeping so many big-money players happy could prove tricky.

It has been a promising start, with a pair of highly-entertaining wins against Fulham and Brighton. The bookies seem to be buying in too.

Liverpool

Liverpool endured one of the weakest title defences in recent Premier League history, finishing fifth under Arne Slot. Andoni Iraola now has to prove he can handle a club of Liverpool’s stature, while replacing key departures Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konaté.

He’ll also need to get the best out of last summer’s marquee signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz after underwhelming first seasons, while adapting his high-intensity, attacking style to a Liverpool side likely to dominate possession – a world away from the Bournemouth team he left behind.

Manchester United

Michael Carrick was handed the top job following an excellent spell on the sidelines at Old Trafford. But that’s what it was – a spell. He now has to prove he’s capable of repeating the feat while juggling the added pressure and demands of Champions League football.

The Red Devils have done some smart business with the additions of Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, but they remain the only Premier League ‘big six’ side yet to break the £100million mark on a single player.

Their season began with a dismal defeat at newly-promoted Hull, and they fell behind at home to Ipswich too, before eventually routing them 5-2.

Who’s fighting for the fringe spot?

Now things get interesting. With Arsenal and Manchester City nailed-on, and Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea with question marks, who can capitalise?

Aston Villa

The Villans lost half their team in the summer with Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans and goalkeeper Emi Martínez all leaving – with all bar Watkins joining so-called “big six” clubs. They have, however, reinvested some of that money – what they could, what with the squad cost ratio shackling them – and have kept their most important asset: Unai Emery.

Depending on how quickly the likes of Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and new goalkeeper Zion Suzuki can get up and running, Aston Villa could still be the most likely team to gatecrash the established order. They’ve finished in the top four twice in the last three seasons under Emery and won the Europa League last term.

Tottenham

It’s amazing what a flurry of summer signings will do. Fresh from flirting with relegation and finishing 17th, the bookies had Spurs as the sixth-most likely side to finish in the top four before a ball was kicked. That hype has died down slightly after two defeats to start the campaign.

It’s not hard to see why they were rated so highly, however. Tottenham have strengthened considerably, with Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke arriving for a combined £228million, while free signings Marcos Senesi and Andrew Robertson look shrewd. They also completed a double swoop for Man City’s Savinho and Omar Marmoush in the last few days of the window.

Now Roberto De Zerbi is at the helm, having previously led Brighton to a sixth-placed finish, there’s genuine belief Spurs can kick on. But going from 17th to fourth is a huge ask, and there are a lot of new players to bed in.

Newcastle

It’s difficult to see the argument for Newcastle challenging the upper echelons of the Premier League this season, even after a promising start – taking four points from Liverpool and Tottenham (nearly all six, but for a stoppage time penalty against the Reds). Eddie Howe has left after last season’s miserable 12th-placed finish, along with Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali.

New boss Matthias Jaissle has a huge job on his hands, having never managed in the Premier League. His task has been made even harder by Newcastle’s change in transfer strategy, with four of their five new arrivals aged 20 or younger.

Brighton

This may ruffle a few feathers, but I’m just not having Brighton as serious top-four contenders. I’m not disputing that they’re the definition of a well-run club punching above their weight – but sixth looks the absolute pinnacle in my book.

The Seagulls have finished eighth in each of the last two campaigns and were a full 12 points off fourth last season. They’ve since lost Danny Welbeck, their top goalscorer in each of those seasons, and defensive stalwart Jan Paul van Hecke. They’ve spent over £100m on six new additions, but the bulk of that has gone on teenagers more likely to flourish over time than make an immediate top-four impact.

Bournemouth

Andoni Iraola may have left the building, but Marco Rose is by no means a significant downgrade and plays a similarly intense, attacking style. Continuity in the managerial department therefore looks good, as does the fact the Cherries have retained the majority of the squad that came within three points of pipping Liverpool to fifth.

António Silva and Álvaro Rodríguez look good signings at both ends of the pitch, while Rayan and Eli Junior Kroupi both remain. The latter is out until October at the earliest, though, which could leave Bournemouth short of firepower early on.

My Premier League top 4 betting tips

There are plenty of ways to attack the top-four market. I’m looking beyond the obvious outright top-four bet. These are the three bets I like most ahead of the new season.

Top 2 finish – Manchester City

Manchester City are even money with bet365 to finish in the top two. I think that’s a fair price for a side with a hugely talented squad, albeit one that has had quite the overhaul. The midfield has been entirely revamped – with Enzo Fernández, Elliott Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi replacing Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders and Nico González.

What’s certain is that they have a lethal talisman in Erling Haaland, a playmaking trio of Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki and Jérémy Doku who all finished last season in sparkling form, and one of the best defences in the division.

To finish in the top 5 – Aston Villa

I don’t think you can look beyond Aston Villa for a top-five finish at 9/2. The top 4 might be a stretch this time given all the upheaval, but if they do miss out on automatic Champions League qualification, they shouldn’t be far away.

As mentioned above, they still have Unai Emery at the forefront, exciting new signings in the door and several talented youngsters capable of making an impact. Emery’s experience at Villa Park is another major positive, particularly when several of their rivals are also bedding in new managers.

Not to finish in the top 4 – Manchester United

I simply don’t understand the bookies’ strong feeling that Manchester United will cement a place in the top four. Michael Carrick has a serious task on his hands to replicate last season’s strong finish.

It’s a different ball game when you’re in permanent charge, while United also enjoyed the luxury of preparing for one game a week with relatively few injury problems. Carrick has already signalled that he wants more signings, with left-back and central midfield areas in need of strengthening.

Champions League football will also stretch a squad that doesn’t look deep enough to sustain a top-four challenge across a full season.
