This article contains spoilers for tonight’s (Wednesday, September 2) Coronation Street, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on YouTube and ITVX.

Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) has come on leaps and bounds in her recovery since suffering a stroke in Coronation Street earlier this summer, but there is still some way to go for the teen.

It was revealed that Betsy and Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne) had engaged in consensual strangulation during sex, which had ultimately led to the stroke.

As a result, Betsy was left with aphasia and dysarthria, which affected her speech and caused weakness in her right-side muscles.

In tonight’s episode, there was cause for celebration as Betsy successfully took a few steps with the help of her physiotherapist.

On hearing the good news, best friend Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) asked boyfriend Ollie Driscoll (Raphael Akuwudike) to bake Betsy a cake, but when they both turned up to visit her, Betsy was less than impressed.

When she was alone with Lauren, she made it very clear that she didn’t appreciate being surprised with unexpected visitors, and she didn’t want Lauren to bring Ollie again.

Lauren was suitably ashamed of herself for making assumptions and clearly felt guilty that Betsy was so upset.

Betsy has had a rough time recently and expressed her loneliness to mum Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers) earlier this week. She tearfully explained that Lauren only visited her because she had to, but she spent time with Ollie because it was fun.

Believing that getting out of the house would do Betsy some good, Carla Connor-Swain (Alison King) stopped Lauren on her way out in tonight’s episode and made a request.

She asked Lauren to invite Betsy out for a drink, in the hope that socialising with her friends would help to buoy her spirits.

Lauren agreed, but will Carla’s plan work? Or will Betsy see through Lauren’s invitation and be left feeling even worse?
