A motorist travelling on a regional road in Co Kildare was among just over 1,000 drivers caught speeding on national slow down day.
An Garda Síochána, in partnership with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and other stakeholders, conducted the national speed enforcement operation which ran for 24 hours on Monday, August 31.
Throughout national slow down day, members of An Garda Síochána, along with GoSafe mobile and static safety cameras, detected a total of just over 1,000 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.
Among those 1,000 drivers was a motorist caught speeding at 128kmh in a 80kmh zone on the R403 in Naas, Co Kildare — nearly 50kmh over the designated speed limit.
An Garda Síochána, with their road safety partner GoSafe, carries out speed enforcement on a daily basis and also conducts a number of high-profile national slow down days every year.
The aim of national slow down days is to remind motorists of the serious risks associated with excessive or inappropriate speed, promote greater compliance with speed limits and support efforts to deter and detect dangerous driving behaviours.
Monday’s initiative sought to promote safer driving and reduce speed-related collisions nationwide, coinciding with the first full week of schools reopening across the country when there are higher volumes of traffic on our roads.
There was also a specific focus in relation to traffic activity in the vicinity of schools at opening and closing times.
