A bag of coins totaling €100 was grabbed from over a counter by a man at a petrol station, but he later felt guilty and went to his local Garda station saying he was “handing himself in” for what he had done.
Ryan Condon, 25, of St Vincent’s hostel, Anglesea Terrace, Cork, pleaded guilty at Cork District Court to this theft and other offences, and Judge Treasa Kelly imposed a total sentence of three months but this was suspended on condition he would comply with the directions of the probation service for the next 12 months. The accused entered into this bond on Tuesday.
Sergeant John Dineen said the defendant went to Texaco on Carrigrohane Road and leaned over the counter on March 30, 2026, and took a bag of coins. He later went to a Garda station and admitted what he had done. Sgt Dineen said staff were informed by gardaí of the theft before they had become aware of it.
In an earlier incident back on July 17 last year, the defendant trespassed at a guesthouse on Western Road and broke a pane of glass at the premises. He also pleaded guilty to trespass and causing damage.
In the most recent incident on August 21 this year, he was found to be threatening and abusive during a drunken incident on Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork.
Stephen Cotter, solicitor, said the young man had a life marked by tragedy and had not dealt with grief arising out of a number of incidents where loved ones lost their lives.
Mr Cotter said most positively for the accused, he was accessing counselling to deal with grief and trauma while in prison. “He does have a plan to get his act together and get into treatment,” the solicitor said.
Judge Kelly imposed an overall sentence of three months, which was fully suspended.
