Wexford Ladies
Last week was a busy one for our ladies on the inter-club scene. First up on Monday were Aisling O’Leary and Triona Hogan who teed off in the All-Ireland final of the Australian Spoons competition in Co. Longford GC.
Our hard-working club secretary Martina Gately and playing partner Helen McGuire were our qualifiers to take part in the regional final of the Granard Cup in Millicent GC on the same day.
Both of our pairings played super golf in Longford and Millicent but ultimately came up just short of claiming honours. Well done ladies, and thank you for representing our club with such skill and dedication.
Our Senior Foursomes team, followed by a large contingent of fanatical supporters, made the long trip to Shandon Park on Tuesday for the All-Ireland finals.
However, it was not to be for our gallant ladies. They played superbly and the matches were very tight, going all the way to the 16th, 18th and 19th holes.
Their opponents, Co. Sligo, were crowned All-Ireland champions the next day which is an indication of the exceptional strength of their team.
Although our ladies may be feeling a bit disappointed, they should take pride in having acquitted themselves so well.
They are still regional champions and there is absolutely no shame in taking the All-Ireland champions to the wire!
There was great fun and games on the course on Monday for the 14-hole step aside scramble. Congratulations to Denise, Madge and Mary on a near-faultless round of 48 to take the top spot.
Well done also to Mary Hatton on yet another fantastic ten-hole score of 28 stableford points.

Wexford
Wexford Golf Club recently hosted the highly-popular Sinnott’s Bar-sponsored scramble competition, drawing a fantastic turn-out of golfers eager to test their skills in the team format.
After a brilliant day of competitive golf on the fairways, the prizes were officially presented to the deserving winners in the clubhouse.
Taking home the top prize after an exceptional performance were the winning duo of Eamon Saunders and Mark O’Leary. Club officials and sponsors were on hand to congratulate all the podium finishers.
The club saw a busy week of competitive action across multiple formats, culminating in impressive turn-outs and tightly-contested leaderboards.
The Saturday and Sunday (August 22-23) 18-hole singles strokes whites competition, sponsored by President Roy Doyle, drew a massive field of 245 players.
Cameron Mansfield (29) put on a masterclass performance, firing a spectacular net 65 to claim the overall first-place victory by a clear three shots.
Mark Mullen secured the gross prize with an excellent round of 68. Category honours were hotly contested, with Donnacha Crosbie securing Category 1 with a net 68.
Ray Heffernan (Category 2) and Michael Furlong (Category 3) both finished closely behind on 69, with Heffernan edging the countback on the back nine.
James Carthy claimed the vets. prize with a 69, decided on the back six, while Declan Curran took home the past Captains/Presidents honours with a 69. John Ffrench (29.5) and Eddie Balfe (32.5) scooped the front nine and back nine prizes respectively.
In the ladies’ division, Emer Ward led the field with 26 points, winning on a back-nine countback over second-placed Suzanne Glynn.
The Junior ranks also showed great promise, led by Ruairí Boyce (7) winning the Junior boys first division with 21 points.
Peter Gilbane took second with 22 points, and Conor Mullen finished third with 21 points. Louise Duggan claimed the Junior girls first spot with 24 points.
Midweek action on Wednesday, August 26 featured the 14-hole open ladies’ and gents’ fourball, sponsored by WGC.
A strong field of 40 teams took to the course, resulting in a three-way tie at the top with the leading pairs all carding 36 points.
Conor White (8) and Seán Hurley (9) claimed the top spot on the podium, navigating the countback rules perfectly to win on the back nine.
They narrowly edged out the duo of Keith Nolan (7) and John Hammond (12), who secured second place via a back two countback breakdown.
Terry Lyons (13) and Stephen McEvoy (12) settled for a hard-fought third place after the tie-breaking calculations.
The week concluded on Saturday, August 29 with the highly-anticipated Talbot monthly medal open singles 18-hole strokes. Sponsored by the Talbot Collection, 26 players battled it out on the demanding blue tees.
Kyle Cullen (12) carded a brilliant net 69 to seal first place. Cullen’s stellar back-nine performance proved decisive, allowing him to win the countback against a resilient Conor White (14), who also carded a net 69 to take a close second place.
Mark Moore claimed the gross honours for the day with a solid round of 74.

Unfortunately, last Thursday was a wash-out, forcing the cancellation of our weekly Seniors scramble.
But happily a huge number turned up at Faithlegg on the previous Monday, with 14 teams vying for the bragging rights.
With the course in pristine order, though rock hard, quite a few found the greens very tricky. Nevertheless, we had excellent scores with a runaway victory.

The Captain’s prize on August 29 was played as a shotgun start with threeballs teeing off at 2 p.m. and the rain stopping thankfully in time for play to commence. A large crowd stayed after close of play for the barbecue and prizegiving night.
Club Captain Richard Doyle and Vice-Captain Robbie O’Neill presided over the prize-giving which included the June, July and August medals, the annual Charlie Logan Memorial scramble and Reuben Dover’s President’s prize.
Richard thanked everyone for contributing to a highly successful and enjoyable competition.
The winner of the Captain’s prize was Pat Cody (23) with a fine 136. Remarkably, Pat ‘s son, Ross, won the Captain’s prize in neighbouring Courtown GC this year too.
Pat thanked his playing partners on both days and Ron Breen and all the staff for the great course conditions.
