I’ve been dealing with oily skin and spots my entire adult life. From hormonal chin breakouts to blackheads peppering my nose, excess oil has always been an issue for me.

While a personalised skincare routine consisting of prescription strength products given to me by a dermatologist fixed the skin on my face, my scalp acne wasn’t going anywhere.

I still had painful pimples cropping up on my scalp, despite washing my oily hair every day and changing my pillowcase regularly.

That was until I impulse purchased a bottle of Neutrogena’s T/Gel Anti Dandruff Oily Scalp Shampoo.

Containing a mixture of 1% salicylic acid and 0.6% piroctone olamine, this shampoo is designed to exfoliate and treat a problem scalp as well as prevent dandruff.

Lather it up while in the shower – I like to leave it on my scalp for a minute or two so it has a chance to work – and it does a brilliant job of removing dirt, product build up and excess oil, without stripping the skin or leaving your hair dry as a bone.

Within just a few washes, I started to notice the difference. My scalp didn’t feel as greasy by the end of the day, and for the first time in months, I wasn’t itching and picking at pesky scalp spots.

The angry, painful spots I’d gotten used to slowly became less frequent, and my scalp felt comfortable again. Overall, my scalp just felt more balanced and less of an issue.

I know that using a salicylic acid shampoo might sound harsh and like it’s going to damage your hair, but actually, this formula is surprisingly gentle.

Unlike other medicated shampoos which can make hair dry and brittle, this one is great for combatting oily roots while hydrating dry mid-lengths and ends. That being said, if you have particularly long hair I wouldn’t skip a dollop of conditioner to detangle knots!

It doesn’t smell like a typical treatment shampoo either. Instead, it has a really pleasant melon and jasmine fragrance that lingers on your strands until the next wash.

Now, I won’t pretend this shampoo is an overnight cure, but for the first time in a long time my scalp feels soothed and clean rather than oily and congested.

And when you’ve spent years dealing with scalp acne, that kind of improvement makes a big difference.

It’s not just me who has reaped the benefits of using a salicylic acid shampoo though. Many Amazon shoppers are pleased with their results. Just take a look at some of the reviews…

‘I kid you not, I’ve got seborrheic dermatitis and NOTHING else I’ve tried has helped as much as these. I feel so much happier now and my hair stays clean for longer!!!’ Said a shopper named Maria.

A shopper named Tasha said: ‘After pregnancy my scalp was always sore and I was getting loads of boil-like spots that were painful. Since using this, my scalp has completely cleared up.’

And a review from a shopper who goes by the name BC said: ‘Have been suffering from painful spots on my head making going to have a haircut a stressful time. Bought this shampoo and from first use there was a noticeable difference within 5 or 6 days pain free a couple more days and all spots have cleared up. 100% recommend this product.’

Simple to use and easy to buy from Amazon, this affordable shampoo is the best switch you can make if you’ve been struggling with oily roots or scalp spots.
