Coronation Street has finally offered viewers a fresh update on Audrey Roberts, after the Weatherfield legend has remained off-screen for almost a year.

The much-loved character, played by Sue Nicholls, has been a fixture of the ITV soap for decades, having first appeared back in 1979.

However, fans have been left wondering what has happened to Audrey after she quietly disappeared from the cobbles, with her last appearance now around 10 months ago.

While there still hasn’t been an on-screen return for the salon owner, viewers have at least been given some reassurance that Audrey is enjoying herself away from Weatherfield, and it sounds like romance is keeping her occupied.

Previous episodes established that Audrey had travelled to France to visit her daughter Gail Platt, who left the cobbles in 2024.

It was suggested that Audrey had met a wealthy new man during her travels, providing an explanation for why she hasn’t been in any hurry to return home.

Now, David Platt has provided another update following his own return to Weatherfield.

David had also been spending time abroad with Gail, explaining actor Jack P Shepherd’s temporary absence from the show while he took paternity leave.

Upon arriving home, David reunited with Shona, and conversation soon turned to what his grandmother had been getting up to.

And it seems Audrey’s French adventure is still going very well.

David revealed that she was ‘swanning about with this new fella of hers, trying to speak French’.

Unable to resist poking fun at his gran, he added: ‘I mean, in her accent, can you imagine? Oooh, café. Oooh, croissant, s’il vous plaaaaaaaaît.’

So while Audrey might still be missing from our screens, at least fans now know she’s seemingly having a rather fabulous time.

David’s return also came with another surprise for Shona, as he arrived back sporting a dramatically different hairstyle.

The character has had a buzz cut, with David explaining his new look away as simply fancying a change while abroad.

There is also a real-life explanation behind the transformation, with actor Jack having undergone a third hair transplant.

But while David is firmly back where he belongs, viewers will undoubtedly continue to wonder when or indeed if Audrey will be following him home.

Audrey appeared in just 28 episodes last year, before disappearing from screens altogether for the lengthy current absence.

Changes to Coronation Street’s schedule mean there are now fewer episodes each week, but Audrey’s lack of appearances has still sparked plenty of discussion among viewers who have followed the character for decades.

Audrey has been at the heart of some huge storylines over the years, while her complicated but loving relationship with the wider Platt family has made her one of Weatherfield’s most recognisable residents.

Her life certainly hasn’t been short of drama either, from her many romances to running the salon and dealing with endless Platt family chaos.

For now, however, Audrey appears to have swapped the Rovers and the salon for cafés, croissants and a mystery man in France.

Whether her new romance will eventually bring her back to Weatherfield remains to be seen.

But after 10 months without Audrey on screen, David’s update at least confirms the Corrie icon hasn’t been forgotten; she’s simply busy ‘swanning about’ in France.
