Andi Peters has come under fire from comedian Gina Yashere following his reaction to Miriam Margolyes’ comments about race on This Morning.
Peters, 56, was widely applauded for his reaction when Margolyes, 85, referred to him as ‘high yellah’ during the live interview, an offensive and outdated term to describe a Black person with a light skin complexion.
ITV swiftly removed the moment from the episode of This Morning on streaming service ITVX, but it was shared on social media, sparking outrage.
However, Yashere, 52, blasted Peters’ for not being firmer with the Harry Potter actor, accusing him of not celebrating his Black identity.
In a video on Instagram, Yashere vented: ‘That reaction was on brand for Andi Peters.
‘I don’t think he’s known that he’s black for at least the last 35 years.’
The comic went on to say she is making the accusation with a person insight, following an encounter with the host.
She recalled: ‘I was on a talent show… I was walking down the hallway of the ITV studios with my black friends and family.
‘We saw Andi Peters walking towards us and we are all big fans [of Peters]. I don’t think he could have run away from this group of black people faster. I never forgot that.’
Peters is yet to speak out about the incident in much depth, but briefly responded to a tweet from presenter Jeremy Vine who praised the star for his dealing with the unfiltered author in such a high-pressured environment.
He replied: ‘Thanks JV. As you know, we have to be ready for ANYTHING!!!’
Margolyes is currently promoting her latest book, Miriam’s Full English, and first addressed the controversy during a book tour event in Southend-on-Sea, insisting she ‘didn’t want to embarrass or hurt Andi because he seems very nice’.
‘I’d never met him before; I didn’t know who he was and I didn’t know he was Black until I saw him. When you see someone, of course you know they’re Black,’ she said.
‘I wanted to know what he thought about it because that’s what interests me. How do Black people feel? How do Brown people feel? How do cripples feel? How do fat people feel?’ she continued, this time using an offensive term for disabled people.
She went on: ‘You see what I mean? All of us feel something about who we are and how people see us, what they think of us.’
ITV is yet to make a statement about the incident, but Peters, cleary uncomfortable in the moment, said during the interview that producers were ‘getting nervous’.
Margolyes flippantly told him: ‘Don’t be nervous. We welcome everybody. That’s what I want to write about in my book. It’s about inclusion.’
