The Inbetweeners fans finally got the announcement they’ve been waiting months for, with the threequel in production at long last.
The third instalment to spin off from the Channel 4 sitcom is being made by Netflix, with Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas returning for fresh shenanigans as Will, Jay, Neil and Simon.
The Inbetweeners 3 will follow on from the two films in 2011 and 2014, which quickly succeeded the cult classic noughties show.
Netflix dropped a teaser trailer over the weekend, showing the gang back together in Simon’s banged up, heavily embarrassing Fiat Cinquecento.
The four men are seen piling into the car, only for it to fail to start, prompting Simon to groan: ‘Ah, for f**** sake.’ When it does get going and chunter out the garage, the number 3 looms on the rear windscreen.
As well as the core four, The Inbetweeners creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris are back to write and direct the film.
Beesley and Morris said: ‘It’s been super-fun hanging out with our friends again, and we’re going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans.’
Naturally, the news more Inbetweeners is in the making sent fans into a tailspin and they’ve started cooking up their own theories for what the plot might involve.
Here’s a round-up of what the longtime Inbetweeners-heads suspect will unfold…
A wedding
Since they will probably need some sort of get-together to reunite the gang in later life, many of the theories on the Inbetweeners Reddit thread have speculated a wedding could be in the cards.
Drawing on comparisons to the various Hangover films or American Pie instalments, @GarlicMagicOnion99 admitted it might be trope-y, but hypothesised: ‘One of the boys is getting married or a school reunion type thing.
‘Will getting married or something similar and I’m not mad at it, just happy we’re getting new Inbetweeners after so long.’
However, respondents differed on whose wedding they thought it would be, with Jay’s name thrown into the mix (with a premise I would be intrigued to see…).

@superdiamond5568 suggested: ‘Jay marries into a posh family and acts accordingly, and Wil the entire time is trying to crack him to show his bulls***.’
But others have been pointing to Simon as the groom, with @AMagnif likening the sticky-up-haired ball of stress to a ‘bridezilla’ waiting to happen.
‘Will doesn’t seem the married type and Simon’s Neurotic tendencies would be funny to play with on a wedding day/stag do gone wrong,’ wrote @Delicious_Walk7220.
That quite neatly brings us onto the next theory.
A stag do
Perhaps it’s the legacy of those Hangover films, but this was the most popular guess on the Reddit threads, even as @Efficient_Soup4777 hoped the result would be ‘something unique’.
‘I think a stag-do will be the most natural approach and I know they’ll do it well, but I’d be happily surprised if they took it in another direction,’ wrote @Accomplished_Song671, while others echoed this sentiment, suggesting small ways the minor characters could get a good send-off.
@SgtPickles2 had a particularly involved suggestion for an ‘epic’ storyline, setting the stage at Neil’s stag: ‘Simon is married with three kids, stressed and miserable but turning into his own father. Jay is an Andrew Tate fanatic running a digital marketing business and thinks he’s a gangster geezer, all the while he’s disliked by his staff.
‘Will is a divorced junior politician who is ridiculed daily in the papers and still looking for the one, his mum is now married to Greg Davies who bullies him relentlessly.’
Another trip abroad?
The two films centred around a sojourn on foreign soil, so this might be the safest guess going – even if some have grumbled it would be the staler choice.
@Ralocan said that would be all that the film really needs: the four lads on holiday together.
They wrote: ‘You could just have Simon be stuck in some sort of a rut and the lads convince him to go somewhere to blow off some steam. (Bonus for Will and Jay being estranged and putting their differences aside for Simon’s sake).’
They said the location will be a ‘big part’ of the film’s success, suggesting a ski trip at Will’s behest might be the way to go, or: ‘They could even road trip there to hit a few more locations in the movie.’

But there were some mixed feelings on Reddit about the decision to take the quartet overseas, given that the sitcom was so heavily fixed in middle-of-nowhere UK ‘burbs.
@Ok_Window5676 wrote: ‘I do hope it remains in the UK and follows similar roots to the show. Obviously not fully as it’d be weird if grown adults were still in school but more just the comedy as the show works more in the UK and mostly only worked abroad in the first film.’
The Inbetweeners 3 will be coming to Netflix, with a release date yet to be confirmed.
