It’s the first weekend of September, the sky is overcast, and hibernation season is just around the corner.

There’s never been a better time than to sink your teeth into a gritty serial killer drama that has left viewers hooked from start to finish and already secured a second-season renewal due to its unprecedented popularity.

I am, of course, talking about Disney Plus’ new drama, Furious – inspired by the 1987 neo-noir thriller film Black Widow – starring Emmy Rossum as FBI Agent Alice, who is on the tail of Catherine (Lola Petticrew), the prolific murderer at the heart of the show’s mystery.

As the synopsis continues: ‘Both walk their paths towards justice, and as their lives start to intertwine, the lines between right and wrong begin to blur.’

The eight-episode show – which just dropped its season finale, so can now be binged as a boxset – has gripped fans and critics with its pacy plot, fascinating exploration of gendered violence and top-tier acting from the cast.

The Guardian has questioned whether it could be ‘the most outstanding TV show of the year’, adding that it is a ‘total must-watch’.

The Daily Telegraph hails its ‘prestige acting and cliché-free dialogue that breathes new life into the tired old police procedural’, and The Atlantic dubbed it ‘uniformly brilliant’.

‘It’s not so much a thriller as it is a treatise on abuse and how to survive with a sense of justice intact. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but it’s worth it,’ The Observer reflected, while Financial Times called it ‘darkly funny and defiantly complex’.

This praise is firmly echoed by audiences, who have scored it an epic 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Intelligent and well written. The territory isn’t new but the execution is brilliant. Great acting all around,’ Douglas O reflected.

Under the Bridge

If you’re looking for a show that leans into the murder mystery and police investigation of it all, then look no further than Under the Bridge.

Starring Riley Keough and Lily Gladstone, Under the Bridge follows the startling investigation into the murder of a teenager, which uncovers uncomfortable truths and heartbreaking revelations.

Emmy, who also serves as an executive producer on the series created by Liz Meriwether, explained why the ’87 neo-noir was the movie she wanted to adapt in a contemporary setting.

‘I felt there was the ability to go deep in a way the movie can’t in 90 minutes and to really understand what these two women were about and explore the kind of invisible thread that is between them,’ she told V magazine.

The series also stars  Quincy Tyler Bernstine as fellow FBI agent Nora, Scoot McNairy, Rob Yang, Danny McCarthy, and Jake Lacy, who will likely all return for round two.

Although there’s not much that’s been revealed about what will come next, Emmy simply said on social media: ‘We are so overwhelmed and grateful for the love and support you have shown for our first season. I can’t wait to make more.’
