Sir, – I had to do a double take of your headline on the front of Wednesday’s paper (“Irish teens getting weaker at maths and reading”, News, September 9th).
Elsewhere, headlines were celebrating the achievement of Irish teenagers coming first in reading, third in science and fourth in maths in Europe.
I had to read to the last paragraph on the front page to get the good news and to the inside article, which reported on a the worldwide decline in reading and maths.
In a world that is full of doom lately, why deliberately focus on negativity instead of acknowledging the achievements of our young people and their teachers? Give them their positive headline, explore the nuances in the following paragraphs please. – Yours, etc,
