Sir, – After delivering business fuel subsidies and deferring tax increases earlier this year, the Government has now announced an increase in public transport fares.
At a time when the disastrous consequences of climate breakdown are already playing out in front of us, and the UN is issuing desperate warnings to encourage action, Ireland appears to have done a complete policy U-turn and is now in full reverse on tackling our emissions.
If preserving the safety of our own existence was not a sufficiently strong argument for Government to aggressively reduce emissions, you would think that encouraging public transport usage to reduce the sorry gridlock of our cities would be motivating enough.
Apparently not. – Yours, etc,
Dr Lisa McNamee
