It was one of three call-outs they responded to over the weekend
The Fethard RNLI lifeboat crew saved two people last weekend after they received three call-outs in three days.
The team responded to call-outs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for people in difficulty at Slade Harbour.
On Saturday, September 12, the lifeboat was launched at 6.52pm following a report of two swimmers in distress at Sandeel Bay.
The crew had to deal with tough conditions including fog, high tide and force five winds as they headed for the reported location.
When they reached the swimmers at 7.22pm they were then met with the task of how to rescue the casualties given the large waves and rocks that were in the vicinity.
After carefully assessing the situation, the crew decided to veer down by deploying the anchor and manoeuvring the lifeboat back towards the casualties.
Both swimmers were safely rescued and transported back to Slade Harbour where they were met by the Fethard on Sea Coast Guard Unit.
The team had received another call out just one day before on Friday, September 11, when the inshore lifeboat crew were requested to help a person experiencing a medical emergency onboard a boat to Slade harbour.
The crew travelled by road in preparation to launch the lifeboat however when they arrived at the scene, they found that the casualty was already ashore and receiving assistance from the Irish Coast Guard. The lifeboat crew remained on the scene until the ambulance arrived.
The team received their final call of the weekend on Sunday, September 13, just before 3pm, following reports of divers unaccounted for at Slade Rock.
However, while the crew were launching the boat they received word from the Coast Guard that the divers had been located safe and well and that no further assistance was needed.
Speaking on the weekend’s call-outs, Domini Codd, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Fethard RNLI said: “This was a busy weekend, but it shows the selfless and dedicated nature of our volunteers who are always ready to answer the call for help.
“We would like to commend all those who called for help this weekend. It highlights the importance of always having a suitable means of calling for help when visiting the coast.
“If you get into difficulty or see somebody else that may be in difficulty on or near the water, use Marine VHF channel 16 or dial 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.”
