Tributes have been shared for a Clare woman following the 10th anniversary of her tragic death during a search and rescue operation.

Caitríona Lucas from Liscannor lost her life during a search for a missing man back in 2016.

An experienced member of the Doolin Coast Guard and mother of two, Caitríona died after the Kilkee Coast Guard Delta rigid inflatable boat she was crewing on capsized on September 12 of that year.

She was the first Irish Coast Guard volunteer to lose her life during a tasking.

The tenth anniversary of her death has been marked by many who have paid tribute to her memory.

On Saturday, September 12, Iveragh Coast Guard shared their own tribute that read: “Today we remember our dear colleague and Coast Guard volunteer, Caitríona Lucas. Gone from our sight, but never forgotten.

“Your courage, dedication and selfless service will always be remembered. Rest easy, Caitríona. Slán go fóill.”

Meanwhile, Search and Rescue Dog Association, of which Caitríona was a member, said: “Today [September 12], we pause and remember our dear friend and colleague, Caitríona Lucas, on the 10th anniversary of her passing.

“Caitríona, along with her dog Zac, were proud members of SARDA Ireland. Not only was she a qualified dog handler of 7 years, who attended multiple callouts, Caitríona was also a dedicated member of the Irish Coast Guard.

“10 years ago, she tragically lost her life during a search operation off the coast of Co Clare.

“She is missed dearly by all and is forever in our thoughts.”

Meanwhile The Caitríona Lucas Challenge, a hiking and adventure group that was set up in her memory, shared their own heartfelt tribute that read: “Ten years have passed, but time has never dimmed the memories of the amazing lady we were so lucky to know.

“Caitríona, you are remembered not only for the way you left us, but for the way you lived, with kindness, courage and care for others. To many, you will always be a hero, a brave woman who answered the call.

“But to those who knew and loved you, you were so much more than that. A loving wife, a devoted mother, a kind sister, a loved daughter, a loyal friend and a beautiful soul. The heart of your family, and a light in the lives of so many.”
