Mayo team invited to civic reception on September 25
Mayo’s All-Ireland-winning footballers are to be honoured with a civic reception by Mayo County Council following their historic success in July.
September’s meeting of council heard calls for the team to be given a civic reception – one of Mayo’s highest honours – in recognition of winning the Sam Maguire for the first time in 75 years.
The civic reception will take place on Friday, September 25. The team is due to depart for the United States with Sam Maguire for five days in mid-October.
The time and location for the civic reception will be finalised in the coming days.
Cllr John Caulfield, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, formally proposed the civic reception, saying that the Mayo team should be honoured for the joy they brought to the county.
The Kilkelly-based councillor said the event should occur “at the earliest opportunity”.
“It was an outstanding achievement by the Mayo team, and I was delighted to be part of the homecoming to publicly congratulate the team,” said Cllr Caulfield.
Mayo County Council, in cooperation with Castlebar Chamber of Commerce, erected a large screen on The Mall in Castlebar, where thousands of people gathered to watch the All-Ireland final.
Cllr Donna Sheridan said that Mayo County Council staff who helped set up The Mall should be invited to the civic reception for the “amazing job” they did on July 26.
Members of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District proposed a civic reception for the Mayo team at its July meeting, which took place the day after the All-Ireland final.
