A public inquiry into the killing of a Catholic man who died following a sectarian attack by a loyalist mob has found a number of “wrongful acts and omissions” by RUC officers obstructed the investigation into his murder.
Robert Hamill (25) was attacked by a mob in Portadown on his way home from a night out in 1997, passing away in hospital two weeks later from his injuries.
The attack was witnessed by members of the RUC who were sitting in a nearby Land Rover.
The inquiry was set up in 2004 by then Secretary of State Paul Murphy to determine whether any wrongful act or omission by the RUC facilitated his death or obstructed the investigation of it.
