Plans to double parking capacity at Galway’s Oranmore Train Station are progressing, although funding has yet to be secured for the project.
The design of a new car park, which would double the number of parking spaces at the station, is nearing completion.
The proposed car park design comprises approximately 300 parking spaces including electric vehicle charging points.
Galway County Council officials said that the project will then be advanced to the planning stage and, if approved, it would be “full steam ahead”.
However, the council has not yet secured funding to begin construction on it according to an update given at a recent meeting.
“Wherever we can get funding, we are going to look for it,” council staff said.
Enhancement works at Oranmore Train Station entered the construction phase in April. The project includes an additional 1km of track and a new 185m-long platform.
At present, Oranmore operates as a single-track station, meaning trains that do not stop there cannot pass through while another train is at the platform.
Officials told councillors the overall project is expected to be completed by winter 2027 and is anticipated to facilitate a doubling of train services.
Part of the second platform deck is currently under construction. A short-term station closure is expected at the end of October to allow works to move to the opposite side of the station.
Any line closures will be communicated to commuters in advance, officials said.
