Mayor wants Drogheda ‘bigger, better and brighter’ as council crews keep town blooming

Declan Power praises council staff and businesses but says more can be done to bring colour to town

Louth County Council crews have been busy keeping Drogheda blooming, with staff out watering and tending to colourful floral displays around the town.

The work is part of the ongoing effort required to maintain planting and public spaces, with council crews regularly watering flowers and looking after displays throughout the warmer months.

Mayor of Drogheda Declan Power has praised the work being carried out but believes there is an opportunity to go even further and make the town burst with colour during the spring and summer months.

“From late spring into summer, Drogheda should be bursting with colour, and I believe more can be done to achieve that,” he said.

“Louth County Council rightly goes through a full procurement and tendering process, and while the cheapest option isn’t always the best, quality and value for money are essential.”

Mayor Power said he would particularly like to see greater emphasis placed on Narrow West Street as work continues to improve the historic town centre street.

“We’re working hard to improve Narrow West Street, and as our main thoroughfare it deserves a standout floral display,” he said.

“Every access point into Drogheda should be bigger, better and brighter — it’s about pride of place and creating a welcoming town for residents, shoppers and visitors.”

While council crews are responsible for maintaining public planting, Mayor Power also highlighted the contribution being made by businesses which have invested time and money in their own displays.

“I also want to commend the many local businesses who have gone above and beyond with their own floral displays,” he said.

“Their effort makes a huge difference and shows what can be achieved when the whole community takes pride in the town.”

Council staff were pictured out watering displays this week, highlighting some of the work that goes on behind the scenes to keep Drogheda’s streets and public spaces looking their best.

From watering and planting to maintaining beds and planters, much of the work can easily go unnoticed, but the results provide splashes of colour throughout the town.

And with the Mayor calling for even more ambitious displays, the aim is for Drogheda to become bigger, brighter and considerably more colourful.
