Late Fr. Oliver Sweeney

The death occurred last Friday of the former parish priest of Templetown/ Poulfur, Fr. Oliver (Ollie) Sweeney. Beloved son of the late John and Mary and brother of Margaret, Bernie, Florence, Josie, Jimmy, Ger, Dolores and Monica.

Sadly missed by his sisters, brothers, nieces Olivia, Paula and grandniece Shannon and all his nieces and nephews, his many friends, former parishioners, Bishop Ger and Clergy of the Diocese to whom sympathy is extended.

Funeral mass took place last Sunday in St Lawrence’s Church, Glynn followed by burial in Whitechurch cemetery. May He Rest in Peace

Fethard/St.Mogues GAA

The Senior Footballers played St. James in their final group game in New Ross last Sunday. Fethard started well with the aid of the breeze kicking some good points. Richie Waters saw his penalty saved midway through the half after Morgen Ellis was brought down but a couple of two pointer frees from Richie and Eoin Whelan helped them to a 0-14 to 0-5 lead at the break. St. James got two goals in the space of a minute early in the second half to help reduce the lead to two points but another two-pointer free from Richie steadied the ship. Ruari Tubrid was on the end of a sweeping movement with six minutes remaining and finished to the net. Four minutes later Eoin was hauled down in the square and this time Richie made no mistake from the penalty spot as Fethard ran out 2-18 to 2-10 winners. They now play Kilanerin in the County quarter finals, game to be played on weekend of 18th to 20th September.

The Junior B Footballers lost out to Horeswood in the New Ross District semi-final last week and are now finished playing for the year. The Junior B Hurlers played Clongeen in the New Ross District Final last Monday. Irrespective of the result they are through to a County quarter-final now. The Senior Hurlers play Rapparees in Wexford Park next Friday 11th September at 7.30 in the relegation final.

Hook Film Club

Join Hook Film Club for an evening of cinema as they screen 500 Miles, a moving story of family, loss and an unforgettable journey along the west coast of Ireland. St Mogues Ladies Club

The Ladies Football team played Ferns in a County Quarter-Final in Ramstown last Friday evening. Two quick goals put them in a commanding position and they maintained their momentum with another goal before the break to lead by eleven points. Fethard continued to play free flowing attacking football in the second half and a third personal goal for Michelle Boland Rice put the game beyond Ferns. They were even denied a late consolation goal when Catherine Whelan saved a penalty as they won on a 5-14 to 0-8 scoreline.

Fethard RNLI Open Day

Come join us on Saturday 19th of September 1-4pm at the Fethard RNLI Lifeboat Station to celebrate 30 years of the re-opened station. Come meet the crew, tour the lifeboat station, explore the D class lifeboat and Land Rover, visit our Water Safety stand and learn how to stay safe on and near the water, and how to check your lifejacket is keeping you safe. Join us for music, refreshments, garden games and fantastic raffle prizes. Everybody is welcome, with fun for all the family.

Hospice Coffee Morning

Doers & Dreamers Women’s Shed, Duncannon are holding their Annual Coffee Morning in aid of Waterford Hospice on Monday 21st September from 10am to 12.30pm in the Community Centre (beside the Church) in Duncannon. Please support this very worthy cause.

Hook Pickleball

The next clothes collection will take place at Scoil Mhaodhóig on Friday 2nd October between 8am and 10am.

GRAIGUENAMANAGH

Lotto Draw

The numbers drawn in the Graig GAA and Highview Athletic lotto draw on September 1 were 1, 7, 12, 19. There was no jackpot winner. The following received €30 each: Pat McGrath; Ciaran Sheehy; Annie Hamilton; Ger O’Reilly (online); Declan Murphy (online). Jackpot stands at €8,750. Tickets are available from any club member.

Graig Tidy Towns draw

Winners on September 3 were: 1st Prize – Caitriona Gahan; 2nd Prize – Ciara Twomey Doyle; 3rd Prize – Cian, Orlaith & Muirinn O’Shea. Money raised through Tidy Towns jackpot will be used to keep the town looking well all year round. Draw takes place in the Abbey Centre at 4pm on Thursdays.

GUSSERANE

Ploughing

Well done to John Whelan from Ballygarvan who claimed second place in the reversible class at the World Ploughing Championships in Croatia last weekend. John put in a strong performance on Saturday in the grassland section to secure the silver medal.

Lotto

There was no jackpot winner and no match three winner of the Tintern Lotto last week when the numbers drawn were 3, 4, 24 and 25. The jackpot remains at €20,000 while the reserve jackpot rises to €2,900.

All Ireland Rounders Champions

Huge congratulations to the Gusserane men’s junior Rounders team who defeated Myshall of Carlow in the All Ireland final in Offaly at the weekend. The fledgeling club continues to go from strength to strength and the men have now graduated to compete at intermediate level next year. Well done to all involved.

Split the Pot

Winner of the recent St Leonards soccer club’s Split the Pot draw was Derek Egan who collects €460.

GAA action

Hard luck to the Gusserane senior footballers who suffered their second loss of the campaign in their final group game against Shelmaliers on Sunday last. A blistering start saw Gusserane storm in to an early lead against the breeze but Shels eventually got to grips with the Gusserane threat and they end up top of the group with our lads in second place.

Well done to the junior footballers who emerged with a narrow victory against a determined Naomh Eanna team to cement their position at the top of the group.

Both teams are now through to the quarter finals, as are the intermediate A hurlers.

Sympathy

The death took place last week of Mai Murphy (nee O’Brien) of New Ross but formerly of Rathnageera. Sincere sympathy is extended to her family and friends on their loss. Mai was buried in Gusserane on Monday following funeral mass in New Ross.

Tuesday Treat Day

The last Tuesday Treat Day of the summer takes place on Tuesday, 15th September from 11am at the St Louis Day Care Centre in Ramsgrange. Give yourself a day out and enjoy music and dancing along with a three course lunch. The cost of the lunch is €12. Booking is essential. Phone 051 389509 to book.
