Chemsdine Talbi’s goal was the difference as Sunderland claimed a 1-0 win over Hull in their Carabao Cup third-round clash.

A lacklustre meeting at the Stadium of Light between the two Premier League sides eventually saw Talbi’s chipped finish put the Black Cats ahead 71 minutes in.

His effort was enough to book Sunderland’s spot in the fourth round of the competition, which takes place at the end of October.

Meanwhile, Joe Willock’s late goal sent a relieved Newcastle into the fourth round as the Premier League side scraped to a 1-0 victory at Sky Bet Championship outfit Millwall.

Just before going ahead, the Magpies had been given a fright when a shot from Tairyk Arconte hit a post, with the hosts at that point threatening to upset the competition’s winners of two seasons ago.

The Lions brought on 15-year-old midfielder Regan Anderson, who became Millwall’s second youngest player, in the time that remained, but Newcastle held firm in what was a hard-fought tie.

Jorgen Strand Larsen struck twice to propel Crystal Palace into the fourth round with a 3-0 victory over Middlesbrough at Selhurst Park.

Strand Larsen nodded home in each half before substitute Daichi Kamada lobbed keeper Sol Brynn for the third as Palace showed their clinical touch in a lively tie that was largely dominated by Boro.

Marco Rose saluted hat-trick hero Ryan Christie after Bournemouth beat Sky Bet Championship Lincoln 4-0 to hand the German his first win as Cherries boss.

It was only Christie’s second career treble and his first since a 7-0 Celtic win over St Johnstone in 2019.

Christie opened the scoring after only seven minutes with a neat near-post finish from Scotland team-mate Ben Gannon-Doak’s pin-point cross.

The midfielder doubled his tally in the 69th minute by heading in a David Brooks corner from a tight angle.

He completed his hat-trick two minutes from time with a deflected shot from a half-cleared corner.

There was still time for substitute Rayan to get in on the act in stoppage time, with a cool finish from the corner of the six-yard box.

A delighted Rose said: “It was a deserved win and a really good performance from the lads.

“It was a top performance for 94 minutes and we had many shots on and off target.

“I think we only gave one chance away, so I am really happy.

“Ryan is a nice guy. We really love him and he deserved it. He came back from an injury, worked hard and now he’s back in shape.

“It’s good for us because the upcoming time is really busy and we need everyone.”

“In the next few weeks we have European football, cups in England and the Premier League is getting very demanding.”
