The body of a man was recovered from the River Boyne last week after being spotted in the water by people passing by.
The incident occurred in an area close to the Obelisk. It is understood the victim was originally from Northern Ireland.
The Boyne River and Rescue Recovery Service said they received a call-out at 11.20am on September 1 after reports of a person in the water near the Obelisk Bridge.
However, due to the low tide at the time, their boat was unable to safely navigate upriver to the location. Two mobile rescue units were sent to the scene by land.
On arrival, their crews met with members of Drogheda Gardaí and were informed that, sadly, the person in the water was deceased.
The Rescue and Recovery Service said: “Due to the difficult and inaccessible location, a decision was made to deploy one of our trained swimmers into the water. The swimmer carefully made their way with the casualty to a safer and more private location where our crews were able to recover the deceased person from the water.
“A General Practitioner subsequently attended the scene and Townley & Sons Funeral Directors arrived to take the deceased into their care.
“Our crews stood down and returned to base, sanitised and checked equipment, ensuring everything was ready for our next emergency call-out.
“Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased at this incredibly difficult time.”
