Cllr Dara Mulvey has led calls for toilet facilities to be opened near the playground at Ballymote Town Park noting public frustration regarding a toilet block that was constructed a number of years but remains inaccessible to the public.

Cllr Mulvey noted, “Ballymote Community Council successfully redeveloped the town playground in 2025, which is very popular with families, but the lack of a public toilet is an issue that is being requested by many people using the town.

“A public toilet block in Ballymote town park remains inaccessible to the public, and people are asking why it is not open on a daily basis. Many elderly people who walk the town park daily have also contacted me, asking about the need for a public toilet,” said Cllr Mulvey.

Urging the local authority to address the issue Cllr Mulvey stated, “I am calling on Sligo County Council to contact Uisce Eireann to ensure there is a water supply to the toilet block that was constructed many years ago but never opened. This is an essential amenity for children and adults attending the playground and park facilities.

“Also, the ESB needs to be contacted to ensure that the power pack at the rear of the new museum building that is under construction in the town park Ballymote, which will be the home of 19th-century horse-drawn carriages, will have sufficient power and a separate outlet for other needs in the park.”

Cllr Mulvey noted the significant works that have been carried out in Ballymote in recent times stating visiting judges from a national competition were left very impressed with all that the town has to offer locals and visitors alike and praised local groups for their contribution to the betterment of the town and its environs.

“Sligo County Council has entered Ballymote town in the National Pride of Place awards. Recently, judges visited the town and they were astounded at the great amenities such as the Art Deco, the new library and museum building, the Senior Citizens Day Care Centre, Town Park, the new community park grounds under construction, Business Park and much more, and great credit to the active community groups who are working for the betterment of the town, stated Cllr Mulvey.
