Former Swansea City boss Alan Sheehan is back in football as the Athlone native has been added to the coaching staff with the senior international team with Wales.
The Welsh FA have revamped their management team ahead of the new Nations League campaign and Euro 2028 – where Wales, like the Republic of Ireland, will expect to qualify automatically through a back-door route as one of the co-hosts and manager Craig Bellamy has brought in Sheehan as well as ex-Wales man Ashley Williams.
“Alan Sheehan and Ashley Williams will be joining Craig Bellamy’s coaching staff ahead of this autumn’s UEFA Nations League campaign as Assistant Coaches. Sheehan, a Uefa Pro Licence holder, was Swansea City’s head coach in 2025 after two periods as interim head coach and has previously held roles as assistant coach at Swansea City, Southampton and Luton Town. As a player, Sheehan made over 400 appearances in the English Football League and was capped five times for the Republic of Ireland U-21s,” the Welsh FA said.
Sheehan (39) spent all of his playing career in the UK after moving to Leicester City from Belvedere in 2003. After spells coaching with Oldham Athletic, Luton Town and Southampton, he was hired by Swansea in a coaching role in 2023. Following two stints as interim manager of the first team Sheehan was appointed Swansea boss in April 2025, on a three-year deal, but was sacked in November.
