A two-year-old boy has died after being knocked down by a jeep in Co Limerick.
A man has been arrested in connection with the fatal collision, which took place in the Abbey Court area of Rathkeale, Co. Limerick at 3:50pm on Saturday.
A family member rushed the child to University Hospital Limerick for treatment for serious injuries.
However, he was subsequently pronounced dead.
Gardai said the jeep did not remain at the scene. The driver, who is in his thirties, was subsequently arrested at a different location on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
He was brought to a garda station in Limerick to provide a urine/blood sample and has been released pending analysis.
The investigation is ongoing.
A post-mortem examination on the deceased child will take place in due course, a garda statement said. A Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has been appointed to support the family.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact Rathkeale Garda Station.
Road users who were travelling in the vicinity of Abbey Court between 3.20pm and 4pm on Saturday 5th September 2026 and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are being asked to make it available to gardai.
The road was closed for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
