Fianna Fáil councillors in Co Wexford have called upon Housing Minister James Browne TD to ensure social houses are allocated to local people rather than those from “other counties”.
Submitting a motion at a recent meeting of Wexford County Council (WCC) Cllrs Barbara Anne Murphy, Pip Breen, and Donal Kenny requested that “local authorities remain in a position to prioritise those housing applicants on their own housing lists and who reside in their county of application, over those who live in other counties when allocating social housing.”
Keen to stress that this protocol should not apply to victims of domestic violence, the three councillors said their motion had been devised “in order to prevent a national-based type of choice based letting where length of time on the list may favour applicants from other counties over those living within their county of application.”
The motion was subsequently passed by the council and will now be forwarded to Minister Browne for his consideration.
