Kerry actor Patrick McDonnell will play the title role in Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape at St John’s Theatre & Arts Centre in Listowel tonight, Wednesday, September 2 at 8pm.
The one-act play follows Krapp on his 69th birthday as he sits alone and listens to recordings he made when he was 39.
The tapes bring Krapp back to an earlier period in his life, when he was more optimistic and confident about the future. As he listens to his younger self, he reflects on the choices he made and the life he has lived.
The play, considered to be one of the great Irish playwright’s best works, is one that explores the themes of ageing, memory, regret and the passing of time.
Written by Beckett in 1958, Krapp’s Last Tape remains, at 36-minutes long, one of his best-known shorter plays and continues to be performed internationally.
The performance takes place at 8pm tonight. Tickets cost €15 and are available at the door tonight or online via the St John’s website.
