An 18-year-old Irish woman has been killed in a car crash in Iceland, according to local media.
The incident took place on Krýsuvíkurvegur, a secondary road in Hafnarfjörður municipality in southwest Iceland, 30km south of the capital Reykjavík.
It is reported that the woman, who was living in Iceland, was in a car with two other Icelandic youths when their vehicle veered off the road in the early hours of Monday, media outlet Vísir reports.
Icelandic national broadcaster RÚV reports that an investigation is being carried out by police who are interviewing a number of witnesses to the incident.
The terrain in which the incident occurred consists predominantly of lava fields and cliffs, it is reported.
A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said: “The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of this case and is providing consular assistance.
“As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases.”
