Macroom-based MEDCO has launched its new premium healthcare collection as the company continues to thrive after four decades.
MEDCO is a healthcare uniform specialist that was founded in Macroom in 1984 and has continued to be family-owned despite the challenges of operating through a global recession, competition from other businesses and an ever-changing market.
Their new collection is powered by VELAREX – a next generation fabric technology that strives to deliver exceptional comfort, flexibility and durability for healthcare professionals.
The new range will comprise four scrub tops and two trousers with further women’s, men’s and unisex items currently in development.
MEDCO has served the people of Cork, Kerry and wider Ireland from its Macroom base since founding, and Managing Director Mark Roche is proud of their adaptability over the decades.
“My parents started the business 42 years ago and we have been adapting and changing as we go,” he told The Corkman.
“MEDCO started selling disposable scrub gowns, which were manufactured here, and we had 50 people here physically sewing the garments before it got really expensive.
“Then we got into nursing uniforms, which back in the day were dresses, and my parents always adapted and changed to whatever was happening,” he said.
Having worked closely with nurses, carers, clinicians and healthcare teams for more than 40 years, MEDCO says the new collection reflects the feedback and practical requirements of the professionals it serves every day.
The new range is made from 45pc recycled polyester and is designed for long-lasting performance to help reduce the need for frequent garment replacement.
Mark thanked the healthcare staff in the Cork and Kerry regions for their support throughout the decades.
“The HSE staff around the country, but especially in the Cork and Kerry regions really supported us back in the day before the internet.
“They were the ones who really enabled us to get off the ground because everything was very local back then, so I would like to thank the Cork and Kerry communities for their support over the past 42 years,” Mr Roche said.
