It has been suggested that Dumay was struck by one of the assistant coaches from GVVV.

Police and stadium security then limited the people who could enter the tunnel.

The game was abandoned with GVVV leading 2-0 with goals from Quincy Veenhof and Justin Spies.

Fans threatened to clash after the suspension of the match but the police were able to escorted out of the arena.

Police claimed that there was already unrest before the clash in the players’ tunnel.

A spokesperson revealed that multiple scuffles had broken out between fans near the pitch.

It was then confirmed that the situation was “back under control”.

After the abandonment, Vogels club secretary Gerrit Kok released a statement on social media.

He said: “What happened this afternoon is a shame it went this way and that is putting it mildly, bizarre and unprecedented.

“We really need to investigate this thoroughly of course.

“What I understand is that the cause was an assistant coach of GVVV struck one of our players and he was on the ground for a while.

“This is what I have been told and then it escalated massively because when something like that happens and a player is lying bleeding on the ground in the tunnel that leads to a lot of trouble.

“Staff simply called for help, for both our player and for the one who lashed out like that.

“What the motive was I don’t know any of that, other than a player was knocked down with teeth out of his mouth and bleeding.

“And then you see it escalating because the scene is so incredibly intense that has everything to do with it.”

GVVV have also released a statement on X condemning the scenes that took place.
