Donald Trump has said he will save his opinion on Scottish independence for “another day”, shortly after doubling down on his comments on Irish unity.
On Saturday, the US President responded to a question from the Press Association by saying he “would love to see” Ireland unified, adding: “It’s going to happen eventually.”
On the second day of his trip to Ireland, he was asked about the diplomatic backlash this caused, saying: “I love my comments.”
Speaking to reporters in Co Clare, he said: “I have always loved the people of Ireland and it just seems to me that you have Northern Ireland and you have Ireland and it would seem to me that one of the naturals of all time is put them together.
“Many people agree. I made what I considered to be a fairly routine comment, I have had so much support on that.”
Mr Trump said he would “say nothing” about Scottish independence, adding that he would “save that for another day”.
During his visit to Scotland in July last year, he suggested there should be a gap of a generation between independence referendums.
However he said that he did not want to “get involved” in British domestic politics.
Speaking at his Turnberry golf resort alongside former prime minister Sir Keir Starmer, he said: “There was a little bit of a restriction, like 50 or 75 years, before you could take another vote because, you know, a country can’t go through that too much.”
