ENZO FERNANDEZ’S new squad number at Manchester City has been revealed, but he won’t be wearing a familiar figure.
The Argentine completed a British transfer record transfer worth £125million from Chelsea to City on deadline day.

But Fernandez won’t be seeing his shirt number at Stamford Bridge join him in the move from London to Manchester.
The 25-year-old wore the No8 shirt during his time with the Blues, whom he joined in January 2023 for a then-Premier League record £106m.
However, he has instead taken the No17 shirt with City.
His old No8 shirt is ironically already taken by another former Chelsea star in Mateo Kovacic, who has held the number since 2023/24.

That being said, City’s No17 is nothing to be sneered at.
For over a decade it was worn by another ex-Blues star in Kevin De Bruyne, who between 2015 and 2025 rose to become one of the greatest and most decorated creative midfielders in the history of English football.
The shirt was also worn by the likes of Sun Jihai, Jack Rodwell, Jerome Boateng and Martin Petrov.
Fernandez also stuck the boot into Chelsea by referring to them as his “previous club” – echoing Enzo Maresca‘s refusal to name them – before also saying he had “always dreamed of being at a club as big as City”.

He said: “I always dreamed of being at a club as big as City. I’m grateful for the opportunity.
“It’s a very emotional moment for me and my family, to take this step at 25 years old, in a football career that I always dreamed of.
“I can already see just how big the club is. We will enjoy ourselves and win lots of things together.”
The 2022 World Cup winner continued by outlining his targets for the season: “Manchester City have to win every trophy they compete for.

“In every competition we play in, we have to compete and win, because this club’s history demands that.
“To be honest, from the first day they believed in me and called me to say they wanted me to join the club, I didn’t hesitate for a second.
“It’s a club that has won a lot in recent years. It’s a club that is making history in football and, for me, it’s a huge challenge.
“To be able to come here, help the club and keep winning things together, that has been my goal since they called me: to come to this club knowing we are going to win many trophies together.”
