MTech’s solutions have helped Johnson Breeders connect data across its poultry operations, improve feed planning, respond to operational disruptions and give leaders greater visibility across the business.

The relationship began in 2014, when Johnson Breeders implemented MTech’s FDSA software at its feed mills. In 2017, the company expanded its use of MTech’s solutions across the business, bringing previously disconnected reporting and location-specific processes into a more unified environment.

Johnson Breeders also credits MTech’s poultry specialists with bringing industry expertise and established best practices to the relationship, helping its teams apply the software effectively to real-world poultry operations.

Debra Segars, Software Analyst at Johnson Breeders, said: “One of the greatest assets MTech has is the people they employ and the fact that they are extremely knowledgeable about the poultry industry.”

Feed management was one of the first areas in which Johnson Breeders saw a clear return on its investment. More accurate scheduling helped the company avoid unnecessary deliveries and the additional freight and handling costs associated with transporting excess feed back from farms. MTech’s solutions have also reduced repetitive manual work, allowing employees to focus on higher-value tasks.

Segars said: “The biggest return on investment we saw early on was in feed, where the process helped us avoid sending out too much feed and then hauling it back at an additional cost.”

The technology has also helped Johnson Breeders maintain continuity during operational disruptions. Following a fire at its Wallace processing plant, the company used MTech’s broiler planning tool, BRPA, to redirect loads to external plants and continue managing bird movements across locations. The tool remains part of its daily planning process.

Beyond supporting day-to-day planning, MTech’s solutions have helped Johnson Breeders gain a clearer view of performance across its operations. The company uses Axis, MTech’s business analytics solution, to bring together information, including production results, grow-out comparisons and flock trends, giving ownership, senior management and local teams greater insight into what is happening across the business.

Johnson Breeders is now building on this foundation by updating its MTech software from Protein to Amino. MTech’s implementation team has supported the business throughout the migration.

Segars said: “Moving from Protein to Amino came with challenges, but they were more people-based than system-based, and Amino is much more user-friendly.”

The transition to Amino demonstrates how the partnership has evolved alongside Johnson Breeders’ business, from improving individual processes to supporting more connected data and decision-making across the wider poultry operation.
