John Mulaney managed to steal the Emmys show while presenting the lead actor award on Monday night at the Los Angeles ceremony.

The comedian, 44, has now prompted calls for him to be bumped up to the full Emmys hosting gig – even after he made a joke about oral sex, which had to be bleeped from the live transmission.

Given the male-centric award he was presenting, Mulaney kicked off his solo stint on the stage by saying it was time for ‘the best part of the night’ before segueing into some general ruminations about men. 

‘Since the creation of television, men have been historically unrepresented,’ he said, earning a guffaw from Paradise star Sterling K. Brown in the audience.

He continued: ‘For the first three years TV existed, there were no men on it. It was just beauty contests and children talking to hand puppets. 

‘Until the early ‘60s, when a man walked out,’ he added, referring to Henry Winkler’s Fonzie from Happy Days.

He went on to discuss the nominated ‘bros’ of the evening, who included Brown, Gary Oldman, Mark Ruffalo, Rufus Sewell and Noah Wyle, who took home the gong for The Pitt. 

Mulaney quipped: ‘Some of the men in this category do Method acting and some do regular, less annoying acting.

‘But no matter what, when these fellas hit their mark, they know all their lines. Why? Because they started looking at their sides earlier that morning.

‘These men give it all in every single take. Unless the coverage is on the other actor and then they might bounce early, but that’s okay.

‘And they can play anything, these nominees. Not just doctors. They can play a cop or an FBI agent or a secret agent. And then that’s it, no other examples.’

The comedian then moved on to the part of the joke that was censored from the broadcast, taking a shot at infamous comments DJ Khaled made in 2014 that he refuses to give his wife oral sex.

As Mulaney quoted Khaled, the audio cut out of the broadcast but came back in for the uproarious laughter in the room. 

Mulaney added: ‘But these nominees know that that is BS. They know there’s often less pressure on them if they do that first.’ The camera then showed Wyle and his wife, Sara Wells, who hid behind her husband.

The moment was shared on X, where it has been viewed over 2million times, with Spencer Althouse writing alongside: ‘LOL this whole bit from John Mulaney was so good. I need him to host the Emmys next year.’

In the comments section, many agreed, with Ash saying: ‘Legitimately I don’t know why they don’t make him the president of hosting every awards show as like some kind of royal title.’

Edu Ribas suggested he take on the Oscars hosting gig as well, adding: ‘He is the best! Funniest guy with the most intelligent jokes. He always kills it!’

The 2026 Emmys were hosted by Mariska Hargitay, in what was her debut in the gig. The Law & Order SVU star was joined by celebs including Taylor Swift, Jalen Brunson and Andrew Rannells for a series of cameos throughout the evening.
