Uganda U-turns on decision to shun Prince Harry’s Invictus Games after Charles intervenes in call with military chief

UGANDA has U-turned on the decision to shun Prince Harry’s Invictus Games after King Charles intervened with a phone call.

The country initially pulled out last week amid the Sussexes war of words with Buckingham Palace over their status as “private citizens”.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the country’s military chief, had slammed the drama as “Meghan and Harry nonsense”.

But in a statement posted to X today, he said Uganda would be taking part – citing a telephone call with King Charles.

He added: “In the telephone conversation, General Kainerugaba appreciated the King’s message and clarity provided by Buckingham Palace on the subject, promising that the UPDF would resume preparations to participate in the upcoming games.”

Sources close to the King said the resolution is an example of the system working as it should following The Lord Chamberlain’s ‘Megxit Means Megxit’ letter.

The letter sent with King’s directions last week made it clear that any organisation seeking guidance on how to treat the Sussexes, who are non-working royals with no official role, they should contact the Palace.

Aides are said to be grateful for Uganda’s courtesy and understanding and the palace is believed to be ready to help with any other dramas that emerge.

Kainerugaba, son of the Ugandan president, owed not to participate in Harry’s games for wounded personnel and veterans without “His Majesty’s approval”.

It comes after a source claimed the Sussexes blamed Uganda’s initial decision to pull out on King Charles’ letter stating their position in the UK is “akin to private citizens”.
