Kildare residents’ speeding concerns vindicated as driver caught travelling over 100kmh in a 60kmh zone

Residents told gardaí they are fearful to leave their own driveways due to speeding

Residents living along a road in Co Kildare say they are fearful to leave their own driveways due to the excessive speeds motorists are travelling at along the road.

The residents voiced their concerns with local gardaí who subsequently carried out a speed checkpoint along the road in Barretstown, Newbridge with the help of the Naas roads policing unit.

During the checkpoint, numerous drivers were caught exceeding the 60kmh speed limit with one driver even detected travelling at 104kmh — 44kmh over the designated 60kmh limit.

Other drivers were caught travelling at 94kmh, 89kmh, 86kmh and 84kmh — all above the 60kmh speed limit.

Gardaí said any driver caught speeding was issued a €160 Fixed Charge Penalty Notice (FCPN) and three points on their driving licence.

“Residents have told gardaí they are afraid to leave their own driveways because of speeding motorists,” said a garda spokesperson.

“A 60kmh limit means 60kmh. Not 80kmh. Not 100kmh. And certainly not 104kmh.

“Your speed can kill. Think before someone pays the price.”
