Drogheda Indoor Bowls – Greenhills Singles Championship

Week 6 of the Greenhills Singles Championship last Thursday saw a restricted fixture list with a number of players absent on the night.

Group A

There was just the one game played in Group A where John Hurley kept up his 100pc record when he took on Josephine Moran.

The game started off with Josephine claiming the first end by a single shot but back came John in the second and levelled the match. In the third end John made a decisive burst claiming three shots to give himself some breathing space before Josephine hit back with a two-shot win in the fourth end.

However, but John closed out the game taking singles in each of the last two ends to win out 6-3. The result leaves John within touching distance of the quarter-final draw with just two games left for him to play in the round-robin group stage. Josephine meanwhile is still in the mix for a spot of in the last eight.

Group B

In Group B there were two matches played and the first of those pitted Jack Howell against the unbeaten Marie Maher. This game turned out to be a very tight affair with Marie determined to keep her run going and Jack needing the win to keep himself in contention for the quarter-final draw.

Marie was first to strike and took the first end before Jack hit back to win the second with two shots and the third with a single. Marie hit back with two shots in the fourth end to level the scores going into the final two ends. However, it was Jack who took both ends with single shots to win 5-3 and inflict the first defeat on Marie in this year’s championship.

The second game in this group saw Sean Donnelly cross swords with Brian Reilly and it was Sean who would win out eventually. He took an early lead and held off Brian to take the spoils 9-5.

Group C

In Group C Gary Griffin took on Gertie Griffin and it was Gary who was able to do all the damage early on with a four-shot haul in the second end and he won the match 10-6 to keep him in the hunt for the last eight.

Next onto the mat for a double stint was John O’Rourke against Tom Devin. In a game that could have gone either way, it was Tom who just got over the line on a 6-5 scoreline with some great bowls played by both players.

Next up to take John on was Sadie Campbell who is going about her business in this group and she accounted for John 8-5 which leaves her at the top end of the group and in a very strong position to progress.

The final match of the group and indeed of the night, was between our Junior Lauren Dykstra and Paddy Griffin. Paddy got off to a fast start and although Lauren again played some excellent bowls, it was Paddy who reached the sixth end 11-7 in front.
