The England star saw red after reacting furiously to a challenge from United skipper Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes initially sent Foden tumbling to the turf and kicked him while he was down before the City ace appeared to kick out at the Portuguese midfielder.
Foden then swung his legs in Fernandes’ stomach before getting back to his feet, his actions clearly seen as violent act and deserved what will come after.
Referee Michael Oliver immediately produced a straight red card for the City star as tempers threatened to boil over.

But Foden was furious with the decision and protested his innocence before also becoming involved in a confrontation with Lisandro Martinez.
And team-mate Haaland appeared to have seen enough.
The Norwegian superstar looked furious with Foden and appeared to gesture for his team-mate to get off the pitch rather than continue arguing with the officials.
Fans on social media quickly spotted Haaland’s brutal reaction.

But the decision also caused huge controversy with supporters questioning why Fernandes was not punished more severely for his role in the incident.
One fan argued: “Red for both or yellow for both.”
Another claimed Fernandes had kicked Foden while the City star was on the ground before Foden retaliated.
VAR checked Oliver’s decision but the red card stood, leaving City to play the majority of the Manchester derby with ten men.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane also discussed the flashpoint during the half-time analysis but did not agree that Foden’s actions warranted a red card.
The incident continued to divide fans, with some believing Fernandes should also have been dismissed following his part in the heated exchange.
