MAGIC MEND: If you have a huge, obvious rip in fabric, try Japanese sashiko stitching for visible mending.
Instead of hiding a rip, sew over it with contrasting thread in a neat geometric pattern.

CURTAIN CALL: Charity shops will usually have a rail full of curtains that can be a great investment with a few tweaks.
If you find a pair you like that are a little long, snip them to around 3cm longer than your window length then cut off the rest of the fabric.
Fold the 3cm back on to the fabric and hem with a simple running stitch.
You can hide any unsightly flaps with iron-on hemming tape, £1.98, Asda.
DRAUGHT DODGER: Now the weather is cooling down, repurpose old tights or socks into draught excluders.
Just cut the leg off a pair of tights, fill it with fabric scraps or odd socks then stitch up the end.
These work wonders when placed behind draughty doors and could help bring your heating bill down.
RUG REVIVAL: Fraying rugs not only look unsightly but can be a tripping hazard.
Solve it by folding the frayed edge underneath and stitching with a strong needle and thread.
For extra security, brush some clear nail varnish over the stitching to lock it in.
