Twice finding the native area from his drives on the 4th- and 5th-hole and eventually made the greens where he was forced to tap in for back-to-back bogeys. Well, it wasn’t enough to reclaim the Waterford Crystal vase after his 2025 triumph, but Rory McIlroy saved his best round for last today. He heads for the clubhouse with a 4-under round of 67 but remains on 1-under overall.
The Holywood, Co.Down man produced seven birdies, including one on the final green. Although too far down the pecking order to reclaim the Irish Open title, Rory McIlroy made a bright start to day four in Doonbeg. Currently, he is back to 1-under as he takes on the penultimate hole on 17.
The County Down native managed three birdies on the front nine, but the back nine hasn’t been so kind. Well, it all boils down to Sunday here in Doonbeg. Rory McIlroy’s bid at glory on home soil may be over, but Tom McKibbin and Shane Lowry can still dream of hoisting that Waterford Crystal trophy into the sky in County Clare.
After yesterday’s stunning round of 65 and a clinic in putting on the back nine, Shane Lowry tees off 2:05pm, with Tom McKibbin starting slightly earlier around 1:14pm.
Despite yesterday’s poor innings, a resurgent Rory McIlroy teed off this morning at 9:20am, while and Liam Nolan has also just begun his final round.

Wow, what a thrilling day of action in Doonbeg. Day three may not have gone to plan for Rory McIlroy, but the same can’t be said for Tom McKibbin and Shane Lowry. Both Irish golfers are well in contention going into Sunday.
McKibbin carded a 68 which leaves him in a tie for fourth-place on 8-under, while some sensational putting from Lowry on the back nine set him up for a 65 and push his lead out to 16-under.

“The conditions weren’t that easy, so people were going to have to do really well to shoot a good score. I knew if I could shoot a good score I could pull away a little bit. I feel like I did a good job on the back nine today and stayed in the fight.
“I’m seeing my lines well, I’m starting the ball where I want to. Hopefully that stays the way for another 24 hours anyway. I felt great out there. I felt like I was just staying in there shot by shot and doing my thing.
“It’s obviously a big day for me tomorrow. I’m going out leading my home tournament and it would mean the world to me to knock this one off. Donald Trump may have come to Doonbeg to watch McIlroy, but instead it’s Shane Lowry who is bringing the fireworks to County Clare! The 39-year-old recovered from a nightmare tee shot to sink a tricky 6-footer on the last green. The partisan home crowd loved that one.
It gets even sweeter for Lowry thereafter as his nearest pursuer Jacob Skov Olsen drops a shot on the 18th-green. A slightly tired looking Tom McKibbin struggled on that last hole, digging himself out of a fairway bunker. His putting also left a little to be desired, passing up on par when he missed a two-footer. Regardless, the 23-year-old still carded four birdies and is well in contention for the Irish Open’s last day tomorrow.
