A new ambulance centre in New Ross is expected to commence construction by the end of 2027 after the HSE confirmed it had received planning permission for the project.
In an email sent to local councillor Michael Sheehan, a representative from the HSE said planning for works at the old fire station on Michael Street had been granted and it was expected that it would go to tender by the second quarter of next year.
The HSE acquired the old fire station building in 2022 and, in the interim, has been designing a 24-hour, state-of-the-art ambulance centre for New Ross.
“I am delighted to confirm this news for the town of New Ross,” said Cllr Sheehan. “Given that the tender is expected to go out in Q2 of next year I would be hopeful that construction of the new ambulance centre will commence by the end of 2027. “
In addition to the ambulances operating out of the new centre, Cllr Sheehan said it was envisaged that triage and nursing services would be provided for patients. The centre will also include a training centre for medical teams.
“We need a purpose-built site commensurate with the calibre of people we have working on the ambulance service in Co Wexford and when this is complete I believe we will have that,” continued Cllr Sheehan. “It is in a perfect location in the middle of the town and will make New Ross a safer place for all its residents.”
While the centre will predominately serve those living in the New Ross district and the wider south Wexford area, Cllr Sheehan said the ambulances could also cater for “the larger catchment area in south Kilkenny and, potentially, parts of Carlow.”
