What looks very much like an expensive Collector’s Edition for GTA 6 has been posted online but it’s not entirely clear what it is or when it will be out.

Before the pricing was announced many people were convinced GTA 6 was going to cost anything up to £100 for the standard edition and even if it wasn’t the natural assumption was that Rockstar Games would at least have an expensive deluxe edition. None of that happened though and the standard edition is normal price and the Ultimate Edition surprisingly affordable.

That’s all good news but it’s still surprising there wasn’t a more expensive Collector’s Edition, containing a statue or other merchandise, of the sort that is often available for other games – including previous Rockstar titles. But so far all there’s been is limited edition PS5 controllers.

Sometimes these sort of collector’s editions come out later and that may be what a fan has photographed, at a warehouse in Mexico. It could be a fake, of course, but there’s also the possibility it’s a press kit or other promotional item that won’t be for sale.

Press kits are similar in concept to collector’s editions, although usually with lower value but exclusive merch. They don’t usually get sent to ordinary journalists but instead to influencers, as a way to excite them about a new game and to give them something to show off to their fans.

GTA 6 hardly needs any additional promotion but there were reports of merch being given out to influencers during the recent hands-off previews, so Rockstar may be doing an expensive press kit anyway.

The photos were taken by someone working at a packaging company in Mexico and while they’ve since deleted their posts, they described it as a collector’s edition.

UNCONFIRMED: a supposed collector editon box for GTA 6 may just have been leaked.

The source is a supposed employee for Unique Services Group located in Mexico.

He stated that the box might include a disc because he has seen “a circular piece where a disc could fit”. He also… pic.twitter.com/V9JvoZTo2Z

According to comments saved by fan site igrandtheftauto.com the source worked at the company for a month but was not asked to sign an NDA.

The worker claims to have opened one of the boxes, which they say is larger than a PlayStation 5 console box and has ‘several sections inside.’ They also suggest it might include a disc copy of the game as, ‘inside the box I remember there was a circular piece where a disc could fit.’

That’s the most unlikely part of his story, as Rockstar announced GTA 6 would be digital-only even before Sony said they were stopping disc production. It’s most likely that either he was mistaken or the space is for a soundtrack CD or similar.

Whatever the box is, the source claims that Rockstar is, ‘distributing those editions to every part of the world where they’ll be sold. It might come out after the launch because production will end in November.’

Assuming any of this is real, and it’s impossible to know nowadays, no matter how real the photos look, it’s not clear that he’d actually know what the box was for or what Rockstar intends to do with it.

The idea that there would be a collector’s edition released at a later date is plausible though, as they tend never to contain the actual game. That may mean Rockstar is waiting for the PC version to be released first, but until they make an official announcement it’s impossible to be sure.
