A 45-year-old man has been granted bail after appearing in court charged in connection with a serious assault in Ballivor, Co Meath on Monday.

Des Sheils, with an address at Taylor Hill, Balbriggan in Dublin is charged with assault causing harm, making threats to kill and the possession of an article during the course of a dispute.

Detective Garda Jill Mangan gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution before Trim District Court today.

She told the court that Mr Shiels was charged with the offences yesterday evening at 7.32pm and that he replied “no” to all charges.

Detective Garda Mangan objected to bail due to the serious nature of the charges.

Judge McKiernan said she considered submissions carefully and that this was a very serious matter.

She granted Mr Sheils bail on his own bond of €200 and subject to strict conditions, including that he have no contact, either directly or indirectly, with the injured party, that he stay out of Ballivor and Tallaght, surrender his travel documents and sign on twice a week at Balbriggan Garda Station.

He is due to appear again before Trim District Court on 20 October.
