There is every chance of a player completing a hat-trick of wins in the same event for the second week running at this week’s Irish Open.
Thriston Lawrence achieved that feat by shaking off some patchy recent form to win the European Masters for the third time – and both Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm head to Doonbeg with a couple of previous victories in Ireland safely tucked away.
They inevitably head the market, with defending McIlroy generally available at 6-1, and Rahm next best at around 10-1.
McIlroy emerged from his post-Masters slumbers in this event last year by winning in spectacular style. An eagle at the final hole earned him a play-off with Joakim Lagergren, and the world No 2 quickly got the job done in overtime.
His performances in the FedEx Cup play-offs – fourth in the BMW and third at the Tour Championship – suggest another win is not far off.
But if we are going to take him on, there are several more appealing options than Rahm, whose head is likely to be scrambled by what he calls the “turbulence” caused by LIV’s slide into bankruptcy.

Irish Open 2026 betting tips
Rahm has won a couple of LIV events this year. But six runner-up finishes show he was struggling to get over the line even before the latest LIV distraction.
Fellow rebel Joaquin Niemann keeps on promising more than he delivers, and another LIV star near the top of the betting, Tyrrell Hatton, has not managed to finish in the top 25 in his last three starts.
We will probably see the best of Hatton at Wentworth next week – a course he loves and where he has won in the past. So the value bet at Doonbeg could be another Englishman, 33-1 shot Harry Hall.
That is a big price for the big Cornishman. Hall’s third place in Switzerland last week was his second top five in his last four outings, and he also played well at the hotly-contested St Jude Championship.
Another English golfer who looks over-priced is Matt Wallace, at 25-1. His form figures from his last four starts read 5-7-15-9.
With some bookmakers offering ten places each way, Wallace looks worth backing to go one better than his runner-up finishes at this year’s Texas and Italian Opens.
Rasmus Hojgaard failed to deliver on the promise of his second place in the Danish Championship when he finished in a share of 11th last week. But at 30-1, he could be worth another chance.
Jacob Skov Olesen is another player who has featured here a few times recently, and his runner-up finish at the British Masters keeps him in the reckoning at 40-1.
Among the fancy prices, Dubai Invitational winner Nacho Elvira – T2 and T11 in his last two starts – catches the eye at 125-1.
And I am prepared to forgive Danish Championship winner Jeff Winther a missed cut at the British Masters. His three previous finishes were T6-T16-1, so he looks worth a small wager at 200-1.
Solheim Cup 2026 tips
If the Solheim Cup clash between Europe and the USA in Holland this weekend provides the same sort of drama as the top amateurs provided in last week’s Curtis Cup clash, golf fans are in for another treat.
The Ryder Cup-style clash between the top women players looks evenly matched.
World No 1 Nelly Korda is the only American in the top 15 of the world rankings, while Europe will be spearheaded by the English duo of Lottie Woad and Charley Hull, ranked seventh and eighth respectively.
Home advantage could give Europe the edge. A one-point win for the home team is priced up at 11-1 and a two-point margin is 12-1. So it might be worth splitting the wager – and the draw at 10-1 is another option worth considering.
In the top scorer markets it may be worth ignoring the obvious candidates, especially with three places available in the each-way markets.
Maja Stark is a gritty competitor and the 8-1 for her to top the European list catches the eye. Likewise, Yealimi Noh could emerge as a surprise points leader for the Americans at 14-1.
